Why Do Forget Things When We Enter Another Room?
Imagine a situation where you are in your bedroom and suddenly you start feeling thirsty. Then, you start walking towards the kitchen in order to fetch yourself a bottle of water. But as soon as you enter the kitchen. Voila! You forget what you were here for in the first place.
This is yet again, something which happens with us on a regular basis. And here too, lies a scientific explanation to why this happens with us. This phenomenon is known worldwide as "The Doorway Effect".
The explanation to the doorway effect goes as follows : A doorway indicates a change in surroundings as it connects two different rooms together. As soon as we move from one environment to another, our brain needs to update the mental representation of our surroundings.
This process carried out by the brain during transition, causes a temporary disturbance in retrieving our memory, since our attention is now diverted to towards the new environment we are in currently.
But the doorway effect is not a permanent effect; it remains temporarily only for a particular amount of time and eventually you regain your memory back.
